The government of Ghana has received plaudits for raising the price at which it acquires cocoa beans from farmers through the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). The increase in pricing from GHS800 to GHS1308 has been hailed as a godsend for cocoa growers. A closer examination shows a less ecstatic reality: these seeming benefits have been greatly reduced by the pernicious consequences of inflation.
