The YAFO Institute’s President, Mr. Nathaniel Dwamena, led the staff and volunteers on a visit to the House of Mercy Orphanage Home in Abokobi, Greater Accra Region, on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at around 10:00 a.m.
We were greeted and welcomed by Madam Priscilla Tetteh Doku, who was later joined by Reverend William Tetteh Doku, the head of the Orphanage home. We were introduced to the kind of people served by this orphanage, given a constructive overview of their job, and highlighted some of their significant issues.
The Orphanage mainly caters for children with special needs. At the time we visited the Orphanage, there were several kids with multiple disabilities including visually impaired, walking impaired, cerebral palsy, epileptic, and other health conditions. This painted a vivid picture of what goes into caring for these children by the Caregivers. It would certainly require abundant love.
Madam Priscilla Tetteh Doku identified their challenges as difficulties in enrolling these children into schools and the absence of a full-time nurse. This meant that they were always running to the nearby hospital to and fro. Having a permanent nurse around who could offer emergency and basic health services would be kind, she noted. Finally, she pointed out that the Orphanage home runs on donations from individuals and organizations. This meant that our visit to the Orphanage to donate to support the home was in order.
Our donations varied from washing powder and soaps to toiletries, clothing items, water, beverages, liberty books, and cash. Reverend William Tetteh Doku received the items on behalf of the Orphanage and expressed gratitude for our coming and donations. He looked forward to seeing us often, and we, as an Organization, have resolved to do this often as well.
Before we left, we were joined by the Customer Service Organization, which was there to plan their yearly party for the Orphanage Home. We helped them set up the space and ensure that everything was properly installed, with a specific focus on the special needs youngsters.
We had the dear privilege of spending some quality time with these kids as well before drawing the curtains down to hurriedly make it back to the AyaHQ where Heroes of Liberty Dinner and Awards was slated to come off later in the evening.
One of our team members, Hilary Esa Agbanaglo, who was present with us, had this to say, “I was very impressed by the work of House of Mercy Orphanage Home especially for the special conditions of the children. Extending our support to them was the best decision ever.” This certainly sums up the general feeling of the team after this visit.
